You know the saying “One good turn deserves another?”  Well in the brewery right now it goes something like “One great bottle deserves another!”  Having had Workhorse IPA added to our permanent bottle line up this month, we decided to keep up the momentum and give you another brewery favorite for a seasonal release. Wry Pale Ale re-creates the American Pale with just a touch of rye malt. A generous dose of Cascade and Amarillo hops and a bit of dry hopping gives this ale an original taste. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

5.6ABV  /  40 IBU  /  13 O.G.

Micah

A Note From Brewer Hans Gauger About Laurelwood’s New Seasonal “Altenberg Lager”

April 16, 2010 1 comment

I was fortunate enough to spend one year brewing and malting in the town of Bamberg Germany studying closely guarded traditional brewing techniques. Before the revolutions of malting technologies during the industrial era, malt was dried over open fires. Direct contact with the smoke from the drying fires imparted a smokiness in all malts, and therefore in all beers. Drinking a pint of Altenburg Lager translocates oneself to the northern Bavarian town of Bamberg, the origin of smoked beer. Shy of a passport, plane ticket and layover in Amsterdam, this beer is as close as a Portlander can get to Bamberg style lagers. Using pilsener, munich and beechwood smoked malts produced in the town of Bamberg, and brewed by a Bamberg trained brewer, one sip of this carefully crafted lager will teleport you and your taste buds to the bier gardens of one of the oldest beer traditions in Germany. No doubt Beethoven, while composing his glorious ninth symphony, was drinking smoked bier.

Come join me at Laurelwood Pizza Co on Wednesday April 21st from 5:00 – 6:00 pm for the official bier release!

Prost,
Hans

Workhorse IPA Is All Bottled Up!

I’m pleased to let everyone know that we will be bottling Workhorse IPA tomorrow morning. It should be hitting the shelves in Oregon and Washington shortly after that. Workhorse is a true west coast IPA, featuring an aggressive yet balanced flavor and aroma. Winner of the National IPA Competition in 2009, this robust ale showcases a true character of Northwest brewing and hops. Ringing in at 7.5% Alc. by Vol.  and  nearly 80 IBUs, Workhorse has been a house favorite since it’s creation in 2007.

Cheers,

Micah
