Sometimes people forget that we’ve got two breweries, the production facility at 51st and Sandy and the original brewhouse at Pizza Co. Though much of the beer line up is the same between all of our locations, Pizza Co has a few unique styles of their own like 40th Ave Amber and Wry Pale Ale. Brewer Paul Bergeman leads the effort to bring some very cool new beers to the Portland brewing scene. Last week Paul and fellow brewer Hans Gauger spent the day brewing Altenburg smoked lager. The two were also bottling a F
ramboise that has been fermenting in oak barrels for the last two years. Chad and Paul filled those same oak barrels with a new beer which will be ready sometime in early 2012. On top of all that Paul has just released Organic Deranger Imperial Red, with Himmelbrau Helles coming out this Wednesday. Sounds good to me.

As many of you know, every year we like to brew a little something special for the holiday season. We bottle these beers in collectible, screen printed 1 Liter swingtop bottles and offer them up in limited quantities. In 2006 it was Deranger Imperial Red, 2007 Olde Reliable Barleywine, 2008 Moose & Squirrel Russian Imperial Stout and this year….
Auld Battle Axe- a Scotch-style Ale commonly called a “Wee Heavy.” Battle Axe is a dark amber ale that went through
an extra long boil creating a pronounced malt flavor. This is, of course, a fuller bodied, higher alcohol ale with a malty caramel and slight roasted character.

Hop Bale Pale
This year we used Amarillo hops from Yakima for our fresh hop offering. The hops were picked and then overnighted to us by our good friends at Gamache Family Farms. Amarillo hops are grown exclusively by the Gamache family- and we love them for. Amarillos are one of the signature hops in both our Green Elephant IPA and Workhorse IPA. These fresh hops have a bit different charachter than the dried variety giving this beer a uniquely fresh character. Cheers to the Harvest Season!

Fresh Hop Organic Goodness
This year we were lucky enough to find Plough Monday Farm near Eugene and their Organic hops. These Organic Chinook Hops were used with all Organic Malt to create a slightly amber brew with great fresh hop flavors and aroma. First year hop farmers, Plough Monday picked these hops by hand and drove them to the brewery early one morning. We're particularly excited to see some new Organic hop varieties coming out of the Willamette Valey these days. Cheers to the Harvest Season.

Art Beer
The Portland Art Museum asked our Head Brewer to make a special beer based on a piece of art from their permenant collection. The painting Chad chose was Homesteaders Arthur Runquist 1939. The Work Progress Administration sponsored piece inspired Chad to brew a beer with sugar sources from the Pioneers' time and ferment it in a quasi-historical way. This amber ale uses not only traditional malted barley but also gets it's sugar from corn, molasses and Oregon clover honey. The beer was also fermented with a small portion of Oregon Oak to recreate the fermentation methods of yesteryear. This is truly a unique brew.

Limited time, limited supply.
Aka: Get em while they last. It’ll be on tap at the pubs for the next month or so, but the bottles will probably go quick.
$4.50 includes your $.05 bottle deposit and gets you about a pint and a half of fresh, roasty holiday beer. Sip by the fire tonight or save a few for a rainy day.
Pick one (or three, or five…) up at any Laurelwood location or at your favorite high-end grocery store.

Brewer’s Notes:
"This strong ale
is as rich and complex as it is drinkable. A blend of six malts and four hops
creates an ale with deep carmel character, spicy hop flavor and a dry
roasty finish. It’s spelled differently because it’s Vonderful." 6.4% abv, 49 IBUs, O.G. 16º Plato
